Few skincare ingredients have become as common as niacinamide.
It appears in cleansers, serums, moisturizers, sunscreens, eye creams, and even makeup. While it has earned its reputation as a versatile and well researched ingredient, its widespread use has also created an important question:
Does every routine actually need more niacinamide?
Understanding what niacinamide does is only part of the conversation. Understanding when it belongs in a routine, how much is necessary, and how it interacts with the rest of a formulation is where thoughtful skincare begins.
Few skincare ingredients have become as common as niacinamide.
Today, it's found in cleansers, serums, moisturizers, sunscreens, eye creams, and even makeup. It has earned a reputation as one of skincare's most versatile ingredients, and for good reason. Niacinamide can support the skin barrier, help calm visible redness, improve uneven tone, and assist with oil regulation, making it suitable for a wide variety of skin concerns.
But somewhere along the way, the conversation shifted.
Instead of asking whether niacinamide belongs in a routine, it became something brands began adding almost everywhere. As a result, many people are layering multiple niacinamide products without realizing it or understanding whether those extra applications provide any additional benefit.
Like many ingredients, niacinamide isn't valuable simply because it's popular. It's valuable when it's used intentioinally.
What is niacinamide?
Niacinamide is the biologically active form of vitamin B3, an essential water soluble vitamin involved in hundreds of cellular processes throughout the body. In skincare, it supports healthy skin function by helping strengthen the skin barrier and supporting normal cellular repair processes.
It has been extensively studied for its ability to:
Support barrier integrity
Reduce visible inflammation
Improve uneven pigmentation
Help regulate excess oil
Strengthen the skin's resiliance over time
Few ingredients offer such a broad range of potential beneifts while remaining well tolerated by many skin types.
Why has it become so popular?
From a formulation perspective, niacinamide is incredibly attractive.
It is generally compatible with a wide range of ingredients, performs well in many different product types, and has strong clinical research supporting its use. For brands, it's also easy to communicate because consumers increasingly recognize the name.
Those factors have created an environment where niacinamide appears in product after product, often regardless of whether it's necessary.
Today, it's common to see a cleanser containing niacinamide followed by a niacinamide serum, a moisturizer containing niacinamide, and even sunscreen formulated with it.
While each product may be well formulated on tis own, layering the same ingredient repeatedly isn't always the most thoughtful approach.
More isn't always better
One of the biggest misconceptions in skincare is that if an ingredient is beneficial, more of it must be better.
Skincare rarely works that way.
Once an ingredient is present in an effective formulation at an appropriate concentration, adding more through multiple products doesn't necessarily produce better results. Instead, it can create unnecessary redundancy within a routine and make it more difficult to understand which products are truly contributing to your skin's progress.
The goal isn't to collect ingredients.
The goal is to build a routine where every product has a clear purpose.
Every ingredient should have a purpose. If it doesn't solve a problem within your routine, it doesn't need to be there.
Formulation matters more than the ingredient list
One of the reasons I spend so much time evaluating formulations rather than individual ingredients is because ingredient lists only tell part of the story.
Two products may both contain niacinamide, yet perform very differently depending on factors like concentration, supporting ingredients, pH, delivery systems, stability, and the overall formulation.
An ingredient doesn't work in isolation.
It's part of a much larger system designed by cosmetic chemists to perform in a specific way.
That's why I rarely recommend products simply because they contain a particular ingredient. Instead, I evaluate whether the formulation as a whole makes sense for the person using it.
When I recommend niacinamide
Despite its popularity, niacinamide remains one of my favorite ingredients when it's selected thoughtfully.
I often recommend it for clients who are working to strengthen their skin barrier, reduce visible redness, improve post inflammatory pigmentation, or better regulate excess oil production.
What I don't recommend is assuming that everyone needs more niacinamide simply because it's become a skincare staple.
Sometimes your routine already contains enough.
Sometimes another ingredient deserves the focus instead.
Every recommendation should begin with your skin, not what's trending.
Niacinamide isn't valuable because it's popular. It's valuable when it solves the right problem, at the right concentration, within the right formulation.
A note on professional context.

Niacinamide has earned its reputation as a multitasking ingredient, but does every routine actually need it? Understanding when it helps, when it doesn't, and why formulation matters is far more valuable than simply following ingredient trends.
